Expect Copenhagen to be filled with tourists next May as it hosts the 59th Eurovision Song Contest from May 6 – 10.
The announcement that Copenhagen will be the host city for the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest came last week with Jon Ola Sand, Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest, saying, “Copenhagen is one of Europe's most popular tourist destination and has what it takes to host an event of this scale.”
Indeed, Copenhagen is the ideal location for next year’s contest, especially with Denmark still brimming with pride over this year’s win in Malmö, Sweden where Emmelle de Forest came home with the prize.
Visitors coming to enjoy the music will surely be delighted to find the event with more to offer, with Pernille Gaardbo, Eurovision’s Executive Producer, placing emphasis in their choice of venue as the site is actually “an islet on the Copenhagen waterfront that is also home to a sewage treatment plant and seven wind turbines”.
According to Mr Gaardbo, “The entire area around the B&W Hallerne will be transformed into Eurovision Island, where delegates, press and fans will come together.” So while it might not look like much now, you can bet that Refshaleøen will be the place to be in Copenhagen come may next year. And if you’re not convinced about the venue, at least you can be sure that the rest of the city has a lot to offer in terms of sights, food and drink, and shopping. You can bet that after the contest, you’ll have plenty of stuff to do and see to make the trip to Copenhagen more than worthwhile!
