The explosion in popularity of online gambling in the past couple of decades has massively widened the industry's horizons in Denmark. Gambling is now literally available at the tips of the fingers of everyone–old and young, male and female. Whether you prefer a rulett játék or online slots, it is accessible with a single swipe of your finger.

Although the same kind of gambling services are available to everyone across gender and age barriers, research has shown that different age groups and genders approach online gambling in slightly different ways. In this article, we examine the research-based differences in the online gambling behavior of men and women of different age groups.

Gender-Based Behaviors in Online Gambling

Historically, gambling has been more often associated with men than women. However, in recent times, more women are showing interest in online gambling and participating in it almost as frequently as men. This survey, completed by 975 online gamblers (175 of which were women), revealed that the experience and behavior of people when playing online casino games differ among males and females based on these factors:

  1. Types of games played
  2. Duration
  3. Motivations
  4. Emotional response

Types of Games Played

This study shows that men are likely to play games like sports betting, blackjack, poker, lotteries, and scratch games. Women, on the other hand, were more likely to play non-strategic games such as slot machines, bingo, and lotteries.

Duration

Men were more likely to have been gambling online for a longer period and typically had longer gambling sessions. Most women, on the other hand, had gotten into online gambling fairly recently. In contrast, their gambling sessions were shorter and less frequent than the men's.

Motivations

While men engaged in online gambling due to the ease of accessibility, convenience, and comfort it provided, women reported doing it for other reasons. They were more likely to be influenced by online advertisements, or else they did it out of boredom or the willingness to practice for free.

Emotional Response

Finally, the women who participated in the survey expressed increased feelings of guilt and shame associated with gambling online. Men, on the other hand, experienced happiness, anger, and irritability when playing.

Problem Gambling

Multiple studies have been done to analyze the relationship between gender differences and problem gambling. The consensus is that men are at a higher risk of becoming problem gamblers than women. This is due to several factors, including the fact that men tend to be less risk-averse and more socially anxious. These behavioral traits strongly indicate a high possibility of developing an online gambling problem.

Some indicators of problem gambling also differed among genders. Among men, the most significant indicators that they had a gambling problem were emotional distress and attempts to hide their gambling activity from others. Among women, though, the major indicators were anger and irritability, a decline in grooming, and attempts to borrow money for gambling.

Age-Based Differences in Online Gambling Behavior

As we age, our risk perception and financial stability naturally change. These changes can lead to modifications in our online gambling behaviors. Seniors, for instance, are known to take more risks and express less control when gambling online compared to their younger counterparts. This makes them more likely to experience social isolation, financial losses, and depression.

The risk of problem gambling is, however, higher in the younger population, specifically those between 18-24 years old, as seen in some studies. This is perhaps because, across the board, online gambling frequency has been seen to increase significantly in people aged 18-24.

The Intersection of Gender and Age-Based Differences in Online Gambling Behavior

Sometimes there's a bit of a crossover between the influences of gender and age on online gambling behavior. For instance, women aged 16-34 years gamble more often, as a recreational activity with friends or in the hopes of winning big. Studies have shown that gambling several times a week decreased in men aged 35-54 but increased in men aged 55-64. Online gambling also increased in women aged 65-74.

Implications and Conclusion

Understanding the connections between age and gender differences and certain online behaviors can be important for identifying and reducing gambling harm. Other things this information can be used for include:

  1. Targeted Ads. Problem gambling resources and tools can be more effectively targeted toward groups that are more at risk–like young men. Advertisements can also be modified to make excessive online gambling less appealing to young men.
  2. Education. Understanding how different age groups and genders interact with online gambling and the motivations that drive each group towards problem gambling is vital when formulating targeted educational resources.

Final words

In conclusion, online gambling is more prevalent among the young, although different genders may engage with it for different reasons. By addressing gender and age differences in online gambling behavior, we can work towards creating a safer and more responsible gambling environment for all.
