South of Denmark, Germany stretches over more than 350.000 square kilometres from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea in the north, to the Alps in the south. In between are located modern cities, picturesque villages and beautiful, dense forests. Scenic rivers cut through the landscape, making a drive here a relaxing experience. During the years following the end of the Cold War, the capital city of Berlin has become a major destination for tourists from all over Europe.
A walk through the centre of the city gives the visitor a fascinating experience of being in the capital of a modern and highly developed country – and at the same time, the walk is a journey back in time. Berlin has been the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and East Germany. From 1945 until the German reunification in 1990, Berlin was an important scene in the ongoing conflict between East and West.
During the Cold War, Germany was divided into four occupation zones. Berlin was located deep within the Soviet zone. In 1961, the Berlin Wall became a symbol of the suppression of Eastern Europe. Border control points such as Checkpoint Charlie became famous all over the world. Following the reunification Berlin experiences a construction boom, which transformed the formerly divided city into an exciting entity.
In the oldest part of the town is located the famous street Unter den Linden, which is a must during your holiday in Berlin. At the end of street you will find one of the city’s greatest attractions, the Brandenburg Gate. A few minutes’ walk from here, the Spree runs through Berlin. The Reichstag building is situated on the banks of the river. There is a fantastic view to the city from the impressive Cupola, which covers the plenary chamber of the German Parliament.
In the south eastern part of the country is located the state of Bavaria. It covers more than 70.000 km2, making it the largest of the German states. The Bavarian capital, Munich, is situated on the river Isar, approximately 50 kilometres north of the Bavarian Alps. The city, which has gained the nickname “secret capital of Germany”, is a very popular destination. The squares of Odeonsplatz and Marieplatz are among the Munich’s attractions, along with a number of churches, cathedrals, mansions, castles and theatres. The impressive buildings bear witness to the city’s past as the residence of the kings of Bavaria.
During the winter, many come to the ski resort Garmisch-Partenkirchen which is located near the highest mountain in Germany, the Zugspitze (2962 m). Some of the best slopes in Germany are located here, but the picturesque villages in between the snow covered mountains are definitely also worth a visit. Actually, the top of the Zugspitze are among the places, you can easily visit. You can go there by cable car or by a cog railway. The border between Germany and Austria passes right through the mountain, so during your visit here it is possible to make a detour into Austria – although it is indeed a very small one.
